Sylvie Courvoisier Poppy Seeds

United States

Although the composition of piano, vibraphone, bass and drums has been familiar to jazz fans since at least the Modern Jazz Quartet, Courvoisier and her troupe will be exploring new possibilities. In Patricia Brennan she has found a kindred spirit, as the vibraphonist also has a background in improvised and classical music. As well as recording under her own name, Patricia Brennan has worked with the likes of Michael Formanek, John Hollenbeck and Vijay Iyer. Thomas Morgan has been one of the most sought-after bassists in progressive jazz for the last fifteen years. He has recorded with Bill Frisell, Paul Motian, Jim Black, Jakob Bro and Tyshawn Sorey, among others. As a leader and sideman, drummer Dan Weiss is a leading virtuoso on the New York scene. He has released a variety of widely acclaimed albums with his own groups (from trio to large ensemble) and has collaborated with the likes of Miles Okazaki, Ohad Talmor, Rez Abbasi and Rudresh Mahanthappa.

Given Sylvie Courvoisier’s compositional finesse and the spontaneity of her ensemble, there can be little doubt that Poppy Seeds can breathe new energy into this musical movement.
