De Beren Gieren

De Beren Gieren is a post-contemporary jazz trio that fuses minimalism with effervescent energy. It’s perhaps no coincidence that the group was born and is based in Belgium, the cradle of surrealism and techno. De Beren Gieren is made up of musicians who are very active on the European scene, but it is within this group that their versatility is freely expressed. Their music is layered, improvised and visionary. Comparable bands include Visible Cloaks, Radiohead, Erik Satie and Jon Hassell. But in reality, it’s better to expect music from Beren.
Pianist Fulco Ottervanger composes most of the songs, inspired by a kind of childlike luminosity, but without ever referring to a specific genre. He challenges the band to find a novel combination of sounds and parts to support their sung melodies, resulting in cinematic structures with a kaleidoscopic quality.
De Beren have been forging their own path since 2009. They began as a quirky acoustic neder-jazz trio, evolving naturally into the subtle acoustic-electronic realm of their latest albums ‘Dug Out Skyscrapers’ (2017), ‘Less is Endless’ (2021) and the latest ‘What Eludes Us’ (2024), for which they collaborated with Norwegian producer Jorgen Traen.
