Pili Coït et Les Exocrines

Lyon, France

The seemingly minimal duo Pili Coït are on the verge of fulfilling a crazy dream: to go maximal. With the 2 of them not at all bored, they’ve been criss-crossing Europe and even the States (via China) for 10 years now, and were keen to invite some good friends along to create a tailor-made set that would blow their larynxes and rub their heartstrings. And so, Pili Coït et les Exocrines was born.

Violin, viola, cello, kaval, bass clarinet and tuba land right in the middle of the guitar/percussion duo, blending their slinky-squeaky-cintillating sounds with their polyrhythmic arpeggios, which have so far been fairly quiet, if a little off-putting already.

Driven by this obsession with love in all its guises, the band tackles an Old Testament opuscule, the Song of Songs, a veritable erotic hymn, where the smells, curves and tastes of fantasized bodies melt into a feverish, trembling alchemy.

Sung in Aramaic, the Middle Eastern accent spices up the lyricism of the text, reactivating the taste buds of ancient melodies and giving the chamber rock ensemble a taste of a thousand and one nights.

Quarter tones and other maqâms permeate Pili Coït’s rock’n’Xperimental grammar, which a contemporary orchestration sublimates with its Spielbergian effects, uniting in the same bed a György Ligeti with an Oum Kalthoum who would listen to a Portishead album while sipping lemon-ginger juice.

In this way, the music of Pili Coït and his Exocrines will linger on regions of the body and the secretions it releases, with the sole aim of thrilling, exciting and surrendering to the ecstasy of becoming one with the cosmos. In all modesty. Pleasure.
