Baba Commandant and the Mandingo Band
It was in Bobo Dioulasso, Burkina Faso, that Baba Commandant formed an ad hoc crew to propel Mandingo funk into the third dimension. A kamele n’goni player and incantatory singer, a fan of afrobeat and sound systems, he invented his own afro-funk gumbo, mixing Mandingo sounds, dub and rock with a touch of punk madness, a DIY formula that he has taken from Sunday cabarets to the underground sound systems of Ouagadougou, and then all over the world thanks to the Sublime Frequencies label, for which he has already burned three tight groove records. Aye, aye, sir!
