Holy Tongue + FLEE DJ set

We’re delighted to welcome independent publisher, label and curatorial platform FLEE project, and trio Holy Tongue. They have announced a visceral live show and vynil DJ sets for the opening of the compilation Athos: Echoes from the Holy Mountain.

Mount Athos, known as the “Holy Mountain”, is a unique and mysterious peninsula in northeastern Greece, home to 20 Orthodox monasteries and numerous hermits scattered across the many cliffs of Athos. These 2,000 monks are entirely devoted to prayer and liturgical music. Rooted in Byzantine chant, this a cappella tradition, essential to monastic life, is characterized by complex, serene melodies designed to encourage prayer and contemplation. It uses a system of modes and scales to create a unique meditative atmosphere.

Based on reflections on this repertoire, FLEE conducted research and made recordings on site, before entrusting Holy Tongue with this original sound material. The band then transformed these field archives, infusing these meditative atmospheres with their science of improvisation, oscillating between dub and experimentation. Holy Tongue Plays Athos is a live rendering of this free and unprecedented encounter between this age-old repertoire and the experimentation of a band committed to the cause of impact and surprise.

The concert will be preceded and followed by a DJ set by FLEE DJs, who blend eccentric contemporary sounds with dissonance and melodies from a variety of latitudes and aesthetics.
